SHOOTING GREAT TIMELAPSE

Aug 5, 2022

Easy tips to get you shooting fast…

Timelapse footage can be fun and is hugely popular as a way to engage your audience. The fast speeds catch attention and viewers like to stick around to see where you are going if you are shooting a journey, or what you are creating if you are sharing some behind the scenes footage.

These films are not hard to shoot but if you are new to creating timelapse footage, just take a minute to check the settings on your smartphone as you may find it makes shooting super simple for you!

iPHONE USERS

If you are on iPhone, open your Camera app and select the time-lapse option It is just below your video and slo-mo button

ANDROID USERS

If you are on an android device, go into your camera settings, press video, and you should have a choice of slow mo, normal or a timelapse setting,

DO NOTE:

iPhones do not allow you to choose a timelapse speed Android devices will offer you a selection of timelapse speeds

YOUR HANDY SPEED GUIDE

1x is good for dramatic speed slowdown
5x is good for lively group shooting
10x is good if you are walking along ie creating a hyperlapse
30x is good for busy shots
20x is good for sunsets

If you are shooting a timelapse for the first time, remember you do need to shoot for more time than you think to create your timelapse.
Most smartphones have a red timer indicator around the record button look out for that, it will tell how long you have been recording and how long your timelapse will be.

If you are on an iPhone and you want to change your timelapse speed you will need to download an app.

Convert Existing videos with microsoft Hyperlapse
You can shoot a timelapse through this app or upload an existing video, and it will turn it into a timelapse for you!

HOLD STEADY

The key to shooting a good timelapse is to have your smartphone steady
A tripod makes a huge difference, but you don’t need to spend a fortune
If you don’t have any kit, just make two small cuts in the sides of a cardboard coffee cup and jam your phone in there to get started
A table top tripod is a good investment and there are plenty of good ones from $10 upwards to be.

FINAL TIP FOR TODAY

Do make sure you have plenty of space on your smartphone when you shoot a timelapse and a full battery.
