REPURPOSE YOUR VIDEO CONTENT

Jul 29, 2022

Everyone but everyone these days is making their own podcast, so if you are shooting video, why not use some of your content and repurpose it? If you know how to avoid the pitfalls then it’s a quick win and an easy way to get more mileage out of what you are creating.

CREATE A VIDEO PODCAST

Create a video podcast

If you are regularly doing video vlog style chats or interviewing experts, then why not set up your chats as video podcasts, so you can repurpose. This is where you see the host and guests in a studio style/home studio – usually they have a big fat mic right in front of them!!

A video podcast, sometimes called a videocast or a vodcast is identical to podcasting, but the content is video based rather than audio based. As with audio podcasts, the video is then downloaded by users rather than streamed, and you get to also carry on hosting it on the platform you use now.

VIDEO CONTENT TO DOUBLE UP

The key to success here is to know what video content will translate easily to audio. Not all video content, especially videos that have strong visuals, will work when you try to turn it into an audio version. Try to use content where your storytelling and scripting are already engaging, and fine tune your script, so you are confident it will cover both bases. It is a good idea to over record your videos as you are probably creating short and snappy onscreen chats, but a podcast will need enough material for each one being around 20 minutes or more. You will probably need to edit your audio, as remember video is visual and not everything will make sense when you listen to it back as an audio version.

WHAT DOES WORK?

What does work for audio?

  • Discussions on a specific topic
  • Sharing your specific expertise
  • Webinars and presentations
  • In depth chats
  • Interview

WHAT DOES NOT WORK SO WELL?

What does not work so well for audio
  • Behind the scenes scenarios
  • Health and beauty tutorials
  • Product demonstrations
  • Webpage walkthroughs
  • Unboxing videos

SOUND MATTERS

Do not rely on a smartphone mic for audio podcasts

Do not rely on your smartphone mic, it won’t record great sound. You don’t need to go and buy a massive podcast mic if you are not sure if this is going to be your thing, so for now I would advise using a BOYA BY-M1 3.5mm Lavalier Condenser mic, which costs around £15 ($21).

When you are recording any video, you need to be aware of sound issues. Traffic, building work, air con units, sirens, all can be distracting. If you are not in a professional studio with perfect sound, you can always add some background music on to distract from any low level sounds issues, but it won’t disguise major issues!

TAKE YOUR TIME

Do be aware that when you cannot see someone, the brain will focus much more on your voice so make sure you do some voice warm up exercises before you record and try and pronounce each word clearly. In my Smartphone video for smart people Quick Start Course (put in link) we have some excellent voice warm up exercises and camera confidence tips but if you have not yet done the course, try these two voice exercises.

VOICE WARM-UPS

Do your voice warm-ups in the shower!
Humming and lip trills are an easy way to get your facial muscles ready for your record. These improve your vocal tone quality and are basically the noise you used to make as a child, imitating the sound of a car or aeroplane. You can do your voice warm-ups in the shower! Professional voice over artists and broadcasters often do as the humidity helps your throat, vocal folds and more. Try to do five of these before you press record.

DO THIS EXERCISE FIVE TIMES

  • Close your mouth
  • Support the corners of your mouth with your fingertips
  • Relax your lips
  • Start with a little buzz when you exhale
  • If you can’t get going, concentrate on relaxing your lips

Next pick a tongue twister or run through them all.
  • What time does the wristwatch strap shop shut?
  • No need to light a nightlight on a light night like tonight
  • Four furious friends fought for the first phone fiercely
  • Any noise annoys an oyster, but a noisy noise annoys an oyster most
  • Someone said something simple, a simple something said to me.
  • Simply simple someone said, a simple something said to me

PACKAGE UP THAT PODCAST CHAT

You may want to create what is called a “sting” at the top and tail of your podcast with music and a punchy strapline. You can find really good deals on short music tracks around 6 seconds long on www.pond5.com from £5 ($7) Here is a good one to try –

Once you are happy with your content, you will need to convert the video into an MP3 file which is what you would upload as a podcast episode. Use software to convert this for you. Kapwing is free, and Audio Converter have packages that start from $9.90 per month

REMEMBER

This repurposing should not be creating a big dent in your wallet or time. This is about a low-cost way for you to extend the usage of existing video plans and is all about creating a new life for some older content that you have already. Get this right, and you are on the way to engaging more people with your content and expanding your brand’s reach.
