How To Shoot Social Media Videos in the Right Ratio Every Single Time

Jan 6, 2023

Happy January – Here’s your complete guide to social media video ratios!

2023 is going to be the year of easy video, so let’s start by making things simple!

Use this easy guide to ensure you’re shooting in the right format for the right platform and get ahead fast with sharing your videos.

Social Media Video Ratios

How To Shoot Social Media Videos in the Right Ratio Every Time

There are four main ways you can shoot your video content:

  • Landscape Video | 16:9 | Horizontal
  • Portrait Video | 9:16 | Full Portrait
  • Square Video | 1:1 | Square
  • Vertical Video | 4:5 and 2:3 | Vertical

If you’re shooting content that you want to put up on your website and use for a wide variety of platforms, then shoot in landscape.

If you create a video in landscape, you can always re-edit it in portrait or square formats for other platforms, but you cannot easily resize video that was shot in a square or portrait format.

Just make sure you stay in the centre of the shot to do that!

Facebook

Facebook supports a variety of formats, including:

  • 16:9
  • 9:16
  • 2:3
  • 4:5
  • 1:1

Shooting in vertical or portrait (4:5 and 9:16) can be the most engaging content to post on the platform, as people tend to hold their phones upright when viewing this app.

Instagram

Instagram supports ratios of 1:1, 4:5 and 16:9.

  • The grid/main feed | 1:1 and 4:5
  • Stories | 9:16
  • Reels | 9:16
  • IGTV | Portrait 9:16 | Landscape | 16:9
  • IGTV | Cover Image 1:1

Take notes that reels show up in your grid/main feed as a 4:5 ratio and open fully when played.

TikTok

TikTok supports ratios of 9.16 or 1.1

Snapchat

Supports the 9:16 ratio

YouTube

YouTube supports a ratio of 16:9 and 4:3 and YouTube stories are 9:16.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn supports a ratio of 16:9, 1.1 and 9:16.

Twitter

As a mobile-first platform, Twitter is optimised to handle video capture on mobile devices and supports all ratios.
