Here it is – our top smartphone for video list for September 2022

Sep 23, 2022

I want you to have the latest information on what smartphones make shooting video a whole heap easier. Every quarter, we update our list on all the latest models that we have tested out on our shoots.

All the latest models get put through some serious paces before they make our Smartphone Video for Smart People hall of fame!

We’re waiting for the launch dates of the iPhone 13 and the Google Pixel 6 Series. We’ll keep you posted on what we think of these as soon as we get our hands on them!!

In the meantime, our top four smartphones below make it really easy to shoot:

Slow-motion footage
Timelapse and hyperlapse footage, AND all have good front facing camera specs for vlogging success.

We have listed the camera spec for the front facing camera in brackets for you.

Google Pixel 5 (8MP) – from £499
For shooting on the move, this has the best video stabilisation. It has a wide and an ultrawide lens and a great night shooter. Like the iPhone 12, it has no telephoto lens, but you can use a clip on lens if this is a dealbreaker. This is our all round favourite right now.

Sony Xperia 1 Mk II (8MP) – from £1068
Launched in summer 2020, this comes with 3 cameras: a wide, telephoto and ultrawide lens. It’s easy to use, offers tons of extras and is the best Android smartphone for creating the popular artificial bokeh style video shot. Plus it has a headphone jack too which is a bonus!

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra (40MP) – from £899
This Samsung is better for video than the new gimmicky 21. It can shoot in 8k if you really want and upload straight to YouTube. It has good stabilisation and a “live focus” setting for bokeh effect filming.

Plus the huge storage is really great for video creators, and it has the best front facing camera spec by miles!

iPhone 12 Pro (12MP) from £1099
If you are an Apple fan, go for the 12 Pro. This comes with three cameras plus a new LiDAR scanner.
This phone can shoot 4K 60fp on the front camera, and the ultrawide lens works well for travel shots and interiors. It can struggle in low light and do note, it needs the Filmic Pro App to do everything they promise!

HAPPY SHOOTING EVERYONE!
